"Head of Ludwig Schames"

"Head of Ludwig Schames" is a woodcut done by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1918, 22 7/8 by 10 1/4. Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and print maker. He did it while isolated in the Swiss Alps following his experiences in WWI. Some think that the nude women in the background are from an earlier woodcutting and that he imprinted Ludwig Schames over top. Ludwig Schames was an art dealer, whom Kirchner displayed some of his work in his gallery. I find the elongated woodcut very impressive and detailed. I've always liked the techniques used in woodcuts, which make shape and texture of a flat surface.
